RAINN Statement on NY Court’s Overturning of Weinstein’s Felony Conviction

Washington, D.C. (April 25, 2024) - RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization released the following statement after the New York Court of Appeals overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 conviction on felony sex crime charges with a 4-3 decision:

“Overturning the conviction of Harvey Weinstein is a horrible decision that does not protect due process—it upends justice for the survivors of his crimes,” said Scott Berkowitz, RAINN founder and president. “Harvey Weinstein was fairly convicted and deserves to be punished for all his crimes. RAINN urges District Attorney Bragg to immediately commit to retrying him. Our heart also goes out to the survivors who bravely testified against Weinstein and are now seeing that bravery turned into a legal loophole. We stand by you.”

RAINN, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization, created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, help organizations improve their sexual assault prevention and response programs, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, free, confidential help is available 24/7 by calling 800.656.HOPE (4673) or visiting hotline.RAINN.org.
