RAINN Statement on Release of Vatican’s Report on Ex-Cardinal McCarrick

Washington, D.C. – RAINN today released the following statement on the Vatican’s report on former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s sexual misconduct:

“This report, while welcomed for its transparency, is only one of many steps the Vatican needs to take to truly rout out sexual abuse within the church,” said Erinn Robinson, press secretary, RAINN. “We urge the Vatican to take additional action to correct its institutional systems that permitted these abuses to continue for far too long. Survivors of clergy sexual abuse have been courageously coming forward for decades. Every one of them deserves accountability.”

The rape kit backlog is currently one of the biggest obstacles to prosecuting perpetrators of sexual violence.
