RAINN Prepares for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month 2017

Every April, the country recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (#SAAPM) to bring increased attention to these crimes and the ways communities can work together to prevent them.

“At RAINN, every month is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month,” said Jodi Omear, RAINN’s vice president of communications. “In April, we turn the spotlight on communities: online, in neighborhoods, and in schools across the country.”

Every 98 seconds, another American is sexually assaulted. Every eight minutes, that victim is a child. “We know that this isn’t an easy topic to talk about for many people,” explained Omear. “The reality is, sexual violence is a widespread crime that affects nearly every household in America. The more we can talk about it, the easier it will be to step in or speak up when something isn’t right.”

RAINN is helping to spur those conversations by sharing information—statistics, articles, videos, and graphics—that can help people feel more comfortable talking about and preventing sexual violence.

“If someone needs help, we want them to know we’re here. Whether we’re connecting survivors with a support specialist on the hotline, giving family and friends the tools they need to be supportive, or sharing stories from survivors who are thriving—we want people to know they are not alone,” said Omear.
