RAINN Response to Central Connecticut State University Newspaper Article

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

February 12, 2007 - RAINN released the following statement in response to an article that ran recently in the Central Connecticut State University newspaper. The article was a "satire" about rape and led to many protests on the campus and in the surrounding community.

One in four college women are victims of sexual assault...It is disturbing that a university newspaper...chose to mock a subject that affects so many members of its own community.

"The newspaper's decision to publish the column is appalling and irresponsible. The FBI ranks rape as the second most violent crime that exists, trailing only murder. The trauma of sexual assault is far too devastating to be a suitable subject for ridicule."

"One in four college women are victims of sexual assault, according to the Justice Dept. It is disturbing that a university newspaper, which should be an advocate for students, chose to mock a subject that affects so many members of its own community."
