RAINN Leading the Way in New Media and Mental Health Support Services

Based upon the innovative technology and success of the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, RAINN was invited to present at the Suicide and New Media Action Planning Summit in Washington, DC., sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA).

In the moments and years following a sexual assault, a survivor is faced with many mental health challenges and obstacles; in fact, sexual assault victims are four times more likely to contemplate suicide than non-victims. Online Hotline volunteers are equipped with the latest suicide crisis intervention techniques to provide those in need with the support they deserve.

The summit brought together suicide prevention researchers and practitioners, health and safety advocates, and new media and communication experts to develop an action plan for using new media for suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention.

The National Sexual Assault Online Hotline was presented as a model for delivering crisis intervention online in a session entitled, “Using New Media to Improve Health and Safety – Examples and Best Practices from Related Fields.” RAINN shared learned and best practices in using new media to promote healthy behavior, educate about an important health issue and help someone in crisis.
