Best Practices Certification Program

As a leader in your organization, company, or institution, you have an obligation to keep the people you employ and the population you serve safe from harm. It’s not an easy task, but it’s critical to maintaining the trust and safety of the people around you.

In response to a growing need for measurable safety standards, RAINN developed the Best Practices Certification Program to help you improve your organization’s approach to preventing sexual violence and improving victim response.

What is the Best Practices Certification Program?

The Best Practices Certification Program is an evaluation tool that RAINN uses to help companies and organizations achieve safety standards for sexual violence prevention and victim response.

RAINN is developing safety standards that are customized for the unique needs of different industries and types of institutions. The program is available for a diverse range of industries, such as:

  • Travel and tourism, including hotels and cruise lines
  • Education, including colleges, universities, boarding schools and secondary schools
  • Youth services, including sports programs and mentorship organizations
  • Ground transportation, including rideshare, bus and taxi companies
  • Religious organizations, including churches and faith-based community programs

Why RAINN?

RAINN is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, and has more than 20 years of experience in victim services, public education, and public policy. Our standards-development team includes national experts in mental health, medicine, security and prevention programming. The Best Practices Standards are designed to reduce instances of sexual violence and ensure a coordinated, victim-centered response, should sexual violence occur.

How does RAINN work with organizations?

Once RAINN has developed standards for your industry or sector and you apply to RAINN to be certified, your organization will go through a comprehensive, two-step process:

  • First, we will perform a review of your written policies and protocols, from staff training and HR policies, to how you instruct staff to care for victims.
  • Next, our staff will perform a site audit to take a look at your operations up close. We’ll interview your employees and make sure that they are implementing the prevention and response policies as intended. If you have operations at a number of locations, we will visit a sample of sites.

If our review or audit indicates that there are areas that don’t meet the Best Practices Standards, we’ll let you know specifically what needs to be improved and give you an opportunity to make the necessary changes.

Once both phases of the review are complete, If you have met the Best Practices Standards, you are eligible to receive the Best Practices Certification. You may display this certification publicly and share it with your stakeholders. This certification is valid for two years, at which time you may apply to be re-evaluated.
