September 10, 2005 — Recording artists Xscape have teamed with RAINN for a multi-tiered national campaign to fight sexual violence. Dubbed "Xscape the Violence with RAINN," the effort gets underway this fall with the distribution of special Xscape/RAINN materials to concertgoers nationwide on Xscape's tour. Xscape will also be recording public service announcements for RAINN.
September 8, 2005 — Scott Berkowitz is criticizing a Senate proposal to cut nearly 50 percent of the budget requested by the White House for the funding of DNA tests on evidence from rapes and other unsolved crimes. The funding cut would undermine the Debbie Smith Act, which authorized $177 million in FY06 for DNA analysis of evidence from about 250,000 unsolved rape cases.

RAINN mourns the loss of Howard Clery Jr., the anti-sexual assault crusader who advocated increased security on college campuses and lobbied for the Jeanne Clery Act, a federal law requiring colleges to disclose criminal statistics and security policies. The act was named after Clery's youngest daughter, Jeanne Clery, who was raped and murdered in her dorm room at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, in 1986.
December 21, 2007 — The 2006 National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), just released by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), shows continued evidence of the remarkable decline in sexual violence in the U.S. over the last 14 years. According to the 2006 NCVS survey, there were an estimated 272,350 sexual assaults in 2006 against victims age 12 and older.

February 5, 2007 — The Justice Department is completing rules to allow the collection of DNA from most people arrested or detained by federal authorities, officials said, a vast expansion of DNA gathering that will include hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants each year. The new forensic DNA sampling was authorized by Congress in a little-noticed amendment to a January 2006 renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, which provides protections and assistance for victims of sexual crimes.
