In the wake of revelations that a superintendent of residential apartment buildings in New York City is a registered sex offender, RAINN spokeswoman Katherine Hull weighed in on the Today Show: “The FBI says that rape is the second most violent crime, trailing only murder.” Clearly, says Hull, registered sex offenders should not have access to people’ homes.

• Commit to only doing business with those service companies that perform criminal background checks on their workers and subcontractors.
• Just because you trust the company you hire, it doesn't mean the employees they send into your home are not convicted felons.
• "Bonded and insured” does not mean a criminal background check has been performed on the worker.
• Many major corporations use subcontractors. You may not be hiring whom you think.
