RAINN Applauds President's Dedication to Combating Violence Against Women
September 7, 2005 —In response to President Bush's State of the Union Address, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) released the following statement by Scott Berkowitz, its president and founder.
"We are grateful for President Bush's continuing commitment to combating violence and excited that the First Lady plans to launch a new initiative to teach at-risk youth 'an ideal of manhood that respects women and rejects violence.'"
"The president's leadership in his first term led to the Justice for All Act, the most important anti-rape legislation in history. This bill, signed last October, will lead to solving as many as 67,000 open rape cases and will likely prevent 250,000 future rapes."
"Instead of resting on that success, the president has chosen to further strengthen efforts to end sexual violence with this new initiative. We look forward to working with the administration on efforts to make sure rape continues its historic decline of more than 50 percent over the last decade."
