Awareness Month Resolution Highlights Safe Helpline

To mark Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) in April, Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) sponsored a resolution honoring the nation’s work to combat sexual violence, and highlighting the services offered by the DoD Safe Helpline and National Sexual Assault Hotline.

Every two minutes, someone in the US is sexually assaulted; nearly half of victims are under the age of 18. While sexual violence has declined by more than 60% in the last two decades, it is still a crime that impacts nearly every family in America.

The Congressional resolution noted that the DOD Safe Helpline, which is operated by RAINN on behalf of the Department of Defense, provides live, confidential help to active duty service members and other members of the military community worldwide by phone (877-995-5247) and online at SafeHelpline.org. It also highlights the two newest Safe Helpline services: a free app that allows users to create a customized self-care plan; and Safe HelpRoom, a moderated online peer support service that launched this month. Safe HelpRoom allow survivors of sexual assault in the military to connect with one another in a secure online environment.

The resolution also emphasizes that “free, confidential help is available to all victims and survivors of sexual assault through the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-565-HOPE) and National Sexual Assault Online Hotline (online.rainn.org), and more than 1,000 sexual assault service providers across America.”

President Obama also issued a Presidential Proclamation in honor of SAAPM, and Sens. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Al Franken (D-MN) introduced a similar resolution in the Senate.
