And the 2012 RAINN Day Winner Is...

Using colorful umbrellas and Skittles to educate fellow students, Miami University of Ohio is the winner of the RAINN Day/Cosmo 2012 Multimedia Contest. The contest is co-sponsored by Cosmopolitan magazine, and the winner will be featured on Cosmo’s website.

With hundreds of schools participating in RAINN Day, the contest was competitive, with exciting events ranging from flash mobs and speak-outs to roundtables and art projects.

Miami University’s WAVES (Women Against Violence and Sexual Assault) group collected signatures of hundreds of students and teachers on umbrellas to spread the word about sexual violence.  They also handed out ribbons and pamphlets to educate students on the issue.

“RAINN does a great job of giving survivors hope that there are still people who care about you in this world…that people are going to be there to support you,” said Megan Kincaid, WAVES member, in an original video highlighting the school’s RAINN Day activities.

“Congratulations to WAVES of Miami University of Ohio and all RAINN Day participants for their dedication to the fight against sexual violence,” said Megan Erhardt, RAINN’s communications manager. “Every event made a difference by educating students about risk reduction, resources and recovery.”  Erhardt also congratulated DC’s American University and Westminster Choir College of Rider University in NJ for their exceptional RAINN Day events.

The rape kit backlog is currently one of the biggest obstacles to prosecuting perpetrators of sexual violence.
