RAINN Internships: Living in Washington, DC

As home to the federal government, several prominent research institutions, and a plethora of non-profit and non-governmental organizations, Washington, DC provides a unique internship atmosphere. Students interning in the District have experiential and networking opportunities available nowhere else in the country. Beyond the national scope, Washington, DC is one the U.S.’s most diverse and international cities with residents from all walks of life and all four corners of the globe. It is also home to buzzing arts and music scenes and an array of cultural activities available to the public, often for free. Although most of our internships are offered remotely, you are encouraged to visit and get a feel for the city where RAINN is based.

AU offers limited residence hall space from May through August with a four-week minimum stay. Located at the intersection of Nebraska and Massachusetts Avenue, the Ward Circle campus is the heart of one of Washington’s most affluent, quiet residential neighborhoods. Transportation to downtown: City buses run every five minutes during rush hours and less frequently during non-rush hours. Metro: Woodley Park/Zoo (Red Line). Located in the safe and friendly Woodley Park district in Northwest Washington, DC, the Boston University Washington Center is home to Boston University's Washington Internship and Journalism Programs during the academic year, but is open to all interns during the summer. The housing consists of three-bedroom apartments equipped with A/C, cable TV, two bathrooms, common area and a kitchen complete with silverware, dishes, cooking utensils and pots and pans. Floors are carpeted. Apartments house six residents. Minimum stay of 8 weeks required. Non-refundable deposit of $300 required in order to secure housing. Available late May-early Aug. $27 per night; limited number of singles are available at $35; not all requests for singles can be honored.

Located on the Red Line just two stops north of Union Station at Brookland/CUA. Housing is available in Catholic University dormitories during the fall semester and summer. However, we recommend you look into this area carefully before deciding to live here, as parts can be somewhat high risk.

George Mason University opens its residence halls to interns during the summer months. It is located right outside of DC in Fairfax, VA. Intern housing is available for $29 per person, per night with a 30 night minimum. Mason offers a free shuttle service called "Mason to Metro"; shuttles run from outside Mason's Parking Services to the Vienna Metro station, Monday - Friday.

GW offers summer housing for students attending GW summer school, doing an internship or working on the Hill. Housing is available from May through August. GW is located near the Foggy Bottom Metro stop (Blue/Orange Line). The Housing Resource Center can also assist in finding housing within the DC, Maryland, or Virginia area.

Housing is available from June through August (3 week minimum). The campus is in Georgetown, one of Washington’s most popular centers for shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. GU is not near a Metro stop, but city buses can get you to and from the nearest one (Foggy Bottom, Blue/Orange Line).

Georgetown University Law Center is located downtown between Capitol Hill and Chinatown, which is an active restaurant and arts district. It is open as intern housing during the summer only. The nearest metro stations are Judiciary Square and Union Station (both Red Line). There are several bus routes nearby as well.

Howard University offers summer housing for interns. It is located centrally near the Shaw/Howard University metro line (Green Line) and a plethora of bus routes. It is also near the U St. corridor, which is a major nightlife center. Internship housing is $35/night per person.

Located near Dupont Circle, this type of housing is privately run for American and international students. It provides dormitory style housing, which includes educational, cultural and recreational activities for its residents. Residents also experience living with people from a variety of political, religious and cultural backgrounds. In addition, each potential resident is carefully screened for security purposes of all residents. Monthly cost includes a shared room, breakfast and dinner for a price ranging from $725-940.

Washington Internship Program Housing Properties
WIP Housing is a subsidiary of the Washington Internship Program, one of the largest internship programs in Washington, DC. However, the housing division extends it services beyond providing living environments for members of its internship program. All current locations are near bus lines and/or Metro subway stations, and are in close proximity to entertainment, shopping, dining, and nightlife. Monthly rental fees range from $750.00 to $2,500.00, depending on the room, location, and included features. 9 + month leases are preferred, but shorter stays can be negotiated.

WISH housing is found at a number of Capitol Hill locations that make it easy for students to access the excitement and charm of life in Washington, DC. WISH provides year-round housing for interns. Two basic living arrangements exist:
• Apartments accommodate two to six interns and have single, double, or triple bedrooms
• Town homes or row houses offer shared or private rooms and shared common spaces

Located on Capital Hill within walking distance of congressional offices, government agencies, and the Library of Congress, this residence offers housing for young women ages 18-34. They offer single, air-conditioned rooms with telephones and limited weekly maid service, with two multi-unit bathrooms located on each floor. Laundry facilities, a TV lounge, living room, library, and garden are also available to residents. For the protection of its residents, the home prohibits alcohol and drugs on the premise, as well as male guests above the lobby level. Rental rate is $625 a month, which includes breakfast Monday through Saturday and Sunday brunch.
